Frequently Asked Questions for New Students
Do I have to stay the entire 3 hours?
A great thing about Mysore class is that you come when you want within the allotted time and you leave when you want so it can adapt to your schedule. You will observe students arriving and leaving the practice space as you do your own practice. At first you should expect to stay for 45 minutes and as time goes on you may find that you need 90 minutes to complete your practice.
I have never done yoga before, is Mysore class appropriate for me?
Yes! Mysore is the best and safest way to learn yoga in a group setting as you will receive individualized instruction and learn the yoga practice from the beginning to be done at your own pace.
Can someone with an injury or a chronic illness do the Ashtanga practice?
Absolutely. Since the practice is taught with an individualized approach a student with an injury or illness may benefit from the practice as it may aid in the healing or recovery process. Modifications for all the postures can be offered. We can also teach the Ashtanga Method on a chair whenever necessary.
What should I expect on my first day?
If you are planning to attend class for the first time, please send us an e-mail to let us know you are coming. We will welcome you into the room where you will see other students doing their practices. The first thing we will have you do is sit quietly and watch the class and observe the room for 10-15 minutes. After observing the class we will begin to teach you the practice from the beginning, starting with how to breathe properly. Expect to stay 45 minutes- 1 hour on your first day.
Should I still come to class if I don’t have time to do my full practice?
Yes-getting to your mat everyday is most important regardless of the time you have to do your practice. For days that you are short on time it is recommended to do your Sun Salutations, the first 6 standing postures, and the last 3 finishing postures for a complete practice.
How many days a week should I practice?
Consistency is key. When you are first learning the practice it is important to attend class 3x/week. Once you have an established practice, a 3-4 day/week regimen will allow you to reap the benefits from the practice. The most devoted practitioners do a practice 6 days a week resting on Saturdays and the Moon Days.
What are Moon Days?
In the Ashtanga system we honor the New Moon and The Full Moon as yoga holidays so we rest from our physical practice. See the full explanation on our Schedule page.
Should I eat before coming to practice?
It’s best to do the Ashtanga practice on an empty stomach as the body will benefit most from the practice this way. We try not to drink water or liquids directly before or during practice as well.
